St. George Island
ST. George Island is located in the middle of the Florida
panhandle. This quaint island is 28 miles long, with the beautiful St. George Island State Park at the far East end.
As you drive in from the mainland, on State Co Road 300, you
begin the views of the lighthouse and the main town area. The town has a dozen
restaurants and two different inns. Most of rest of the island is inhabited by
retirees and private vacation rentals, which creates less crowded beaches and a
laid back feel.
When I visited the island the first place I went was the St.
George Lighthouse. There is non-paid parking adjacent to the lighthouse. The
property also holds an information hut, a park and beach access.
The lighthouse is open Mon- Fri 10am-5pm and Sat 12pm-5pm, and you can take a self-tour for $5/per person.
St. George Island State Park is located at the far East end of the island. The Park has 9 full miles of undeveloped beaches and features swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating, fishing and hiking. Camping is also available for $24/ night, plus a non-refundable $6.70 reservation fee. A day pass fee is $6/ per vehicle.
