Elephant Butte Lake

Elephant Butte Lake

Elephant Butte Lake State Park is the largest state part in New Mexico. The park features a vast variety of water activities including fishing, swimming, scuba diving, Jet ski’s, sailing, kayaking, cruising, ski boats and houseboats.

The day pass/entrance fee is $5 per vehicle and camping ranges from $8 (primitive) to $18 (with full hook ups).

On our trip we met up with a group of kayakers from meetup.com. Meetup is am amazing website connecting people with shared interests in community.

I had a blast meeting everyone, and joining in with the camping festivities. In no time at all these people felt like family,

That evening after kayaking and lounging around by the campfire, we headed to the main camping area for the Luminaria Beachwalk event. 4000 luminarias lined the the paths leading to the bonfires and sponsored events. Dozens of RV were lit up with Christmas lights , and many were passing out different kinds of soup.
We walked the paths sipping  soup and admiring the Christmas decorations. Everyone was very friendly and we seemed to make up our own special community. Perhaps my favorite Christmas event of all times.
